Do you see our awards on the Christmas tables?

At this time of the year, we’ll see a list of a flurry of recognition programs ripe for awards: corporate anniversary, dealer awards, donor appreciation, founder’s club, team achievement, chairman’s reward, wellness programs, etc.

In addition to longevity (one year, five years, 10 years, etc.) and safety awards, there is a trend towards recognition, probably due to the millennial generation in the workforce. What’s missing?

My friend’s husband recently celebrated 30 years with his company. Previously, this had been a great milestone with much fanfare.

Unfortunately, the company merged and they adopted the sister company’s award program instead. It was a huge disappointment. They gave him a card and a catalog to order his own gift.

Really? After 30 years of hard work, dedication and loyalty, and you want him to pick a gift they could pick up while out running errands on Saturday? The couple took the coffeemaker and plans on re-gifting it at Christmas.

A personalized booklet printed with individual quotes from his colleagues about him had much more meaning. He prized that $5 booklet way more than the $150 coffeemaker.

The employee has to feel celebrated by the company, which also needs to be acknowledged in the presentation. The award should somehow reflect the company.

Inspiring Greatness

Awards are a little like the color red: There are almost an infinite number of shades, but everyone has a favorite. It takes hard work, patience and real communication to set up an on going award program that works. But when done properly, it can propel a company to the next level, so awards are absolutely vital.

This metal Envision Award with see-through bands of brilliance makes for a breakthrough award for those who have used their insight to succeed.

Beyond back patting

Daily pats on the back, however, do not replace the need for larger recognition that represents an accumulation of years of service or significant achievement. These are candidates for end-of-year presentations that celebrate the value of an employee, client or even supplier.

Companies engaged in recognition have higher business results, and there is a direct link between engaged workers and satisfied customers. The same can be said of vendor relations. Companies that reward good service, preferred pricing and quality/performance are more likely to receive exceptional support and profitable partnering from their vendors.

Perpetual Plaque

A perpetual plaque recognizes that teamwork is a part of personal awards and builds excitement through the end of the year. When a car dealer was looking for a way to recognize the monthly volume of new sales by each of its salesman, we used perpetual plaque.

We created this desktop perpetual plaque concept so that they would be handsomely displayed on the individuals’ desktop to motivate the sales force. The dealer receives an engraved nameplate monthly that they easily attach to their plaque. At year-end, employees can be recognized by the goals they reached throughout the year.
