The art of making medallions, Part I

Dir striking is considered to the the premier method for making medallic products. In this process, a solid metal blank is placed in a large stamping press and a steel die containing a two or three dimensional image strikes the metal blank. The stamping press applies tons of pressure that imparts the metal with the die’s image, thus results in high relief images and sharp detail. Typically it is used by the mint to strike coins for circulation. Yet, when a really high end medallic product is needed, with exceptionally high relief, special techniques such as multiple striking along with polishing and finishing are available to enhance any image.

Typically manufacturers use precious and semi-precious materials such as gold, silver, brass and bronze to make die struck medallics.
